The Whitinsville Retirement Home and Whitinsville Elderly Apartments are owned and operated by the Whitinsville Retirement Society, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable housing for senior citizens aged 62 and older.

Position Summary

The Director is responsible for the overall leadership and daily management of the Whitinsville Retirement Home (an 18‑unit congregate living facility) and the Whitinsville Elderly Apartments (a 24‑unit apartment building). This role ensures the delivery of safe, affordable, and comfortable housing while overseeing staff, operations, budgeting, compliance, and resident relations.

This position reports to and receives strategic direction from the Board of Directors of the Whitinsville Retirement Society, Inc.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of both facilities in accordance with WRSI policies and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain accurate, compliant administrative and resident files.
  • Manage the waiting list, promptly fill vacancies, and support smooth resident transitions.

Financial Management

  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Bookkeeper to develop and manage the annual operating budget.
  • Monitor monthly financial statements, control operating expenses, and implement corrective actions as needed.

Staff Management

  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise 8–10 part-time employees across bookkeeping, food service, housekeeping, and maintenance.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and support to ensure high-quality service delivery.

Resident Services & Community Engagement

  • Oversee menu approval, food procurement, and inventory practices at the Retirement Home to ensure quality and minimize waste.
  • Plan and promote regular social activities for residents.
  • Maintain positive resident relations at the Apartments, including community programming, follow-up on resident concerns, and regularly scheduled on-site office hours.

Property & Compliance Management

  • Administer leases and rent in accordance with Board-approved rates and established procedures.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all relevant regulations, reporting risks and compliance issues to the Board.
  • Serve as the public-facing representative of WRSI by promoting the facilities, conducting tours, and supporting outreach.

Governance & Reporting

  • Prepare and present the Director’s Report at monthly Board meetings and at the annual Society meeting.
  • Lead or support special initiatives and projects as assigned by the Board.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in senior living, property management, or a related industry.
  • Warm, compassionate approach with a strong commitment to serving older adults.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate staff and foster a positive environment.
  • Experience in personnel management, including hiring, training, supervision, and performance evaluations.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving abilities especially when navigating crises or operating under pressure.
  • Professional conflict-resolution abilities at all levels.
  • Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and complete work accurately and on schedule.
  • Financial management experience.
  • Strong project management skills and a hands-on, team-oriented approach.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Additional Information

  • Typical work schedule is 40–45 hours per week.
  • Hours may vary based on resident and staff needs, generally between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with flexibility to meet operational demands.
  • Meals are provided during working hours.
